Chronic Pain Treatment - Mind Body Syndrome

Research over the past ten years has identified the link between emotional and physical conditions, and scientists are now demonstrating more precisely how emotional signals get translated into physical pain.

John Stracks, MD an integrative medicine specialist at NMPG’s Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness, has been interested in this mind-body connection, or Mind Body Syndrome (MBS), for over a decade. He has trained with renowned physicians in the field of mind-body pain management and believes that chronic conditions such as back pain, neck pain, arthritis, GERD, fibromyalgia, and many others all may have a significant emotional component.

Dr. Stracks is currently teaching a four-week course in this area for patients who believe that the power of the mind can be used to heal the symptoms in their bodies. All patients who are interested in a mind-body evaluation meet first for an individual consultation with Dr. Stracks. During that consultation, Dr. Stracks explores a patient's medical history, paying particular attention to episodes of severe pain and the stressful events or emotions that may have accompanied those episodes. For patients without serious physical issues such as infections or cancer, our four-week course is often recommended.
